A Slippery Slope
Greetings! A Slippery Slope. The image attached to this blog posting has absolutely nothing to do with the UFO problem, or does it? The Internet, including social media, is chock full of images that are photoshopped and/or hoaxed, and they are shared constantly. Whilst most of these images are easily determined to be hoaxes, some others can be a bit more difficult to discern. While seemingly harmless, the sharing of such content has resulted in the sloppy acceptance of a good number of these images as valid. Many such images reported to show unidentified flying objects are accepted as valid despite having been shown to be hoaxes, and therein lies the problem. Individuals accept fake news/misinformation/disinformation all the time, and these kinds of hoaxed/photoshopped images are part of the problem. Invalid content muddies the waters, and wastes our time. Once accepted as valid in the eyes of the public, or in this case the UFO community, fake becomes fact and the ball keeps rolling downhill. UFO investigators have to spend valuable time debunking such hoaxes, time which would be far better spent investigating valid data/evidence, and despite their efforts and all the evidence, some people still believe. Professionally, I find it extremely troubling and disturbing coming across such content, especially when a UFO investigator is the person responsible for the sharing. Indefensible!! Thank you for your time and support.
